Does My Pet Have Arthritis?

Does My Pet Have Arthritis?

Allow me to introduce Melord, the malamute. He is my mom’s dog and he will be thirteen years old in March, 2015. The golden retriever is named Jake, and he is my friend Cathy’s dog. Jake will be ten years old in Dec, 2014. Both of these boys are in the old dogs club, basically meaning they have hit the nine year age group which puts them in the “older” dog category. Sadly, they now both suffer from arthritis which is common in dogs that are larger and heavier and yes they are both “big” boys!

Certain breeds lend themselves to breed-specific problems.

  • Newfoundland’s commonly suffer from cruciate ligament disease of all breeds.
  • Knee and ankle concerns plague Rottweiler’s
  • Elbow dysplasia is common in Bernese Mountain dogs.

Think back over the life of your pet. They have likely led a pretty active lifestyle of running and fetching and jumping up onto the deck, couch and into the car with naught a care in the world. Lately, you may have noticed they have slowed down a fair bit and seem to be in some discomfort and out of sorts with their previous daily activity. One of the most common ailments of our aging pets is arthritis. Arthritis is a form of joint disorder that involves inflammation of one or more of their joints causing them pain.

Symptoms related to Joint Pain (Arthritis)

If your pet is telling you they have any of the symptoms noted below, or if they are the silent type and do not say much but are acting as if they have any of these symptoms, you should have them checked out by your veterinarian for a confirmed diagnosis.

  • I’m so tired

    • You may notice that your pet does not have the same level of activity you are used to. They are sleeping more to help their body heal and to prevent the pain of movement.
  • I’m in pain and I am having difficulty moving
    • You may notice your dog is reluctant to do the stairs or to climb into the car they always loved to travel in. You may find your cat no longer jumps onto the counter or other higher perch areas they frequented.
  • My spine is misaligned
    • Arthritic changes often occur in the legs of pets. It can also occur in various parts of the spine. You may note your pet seems to have a sore neck or an abnormal stance.
  • I am stiff and suffering from a limp
    • You may notice your pet is limping or favoring one of their legs, especially after a night’s sleep or even a short nap.
  • I have an aversion to being petted and I used to love it
    • Often a pet with arthritis is more irritable with the pain. You would be too if someone was touching you in parts of your body that were in pain!

Arthritis Treatment for Dogs and Cats

Sadly, there is no cure for arthritis; however there are various remedies and procedures that can help ease the pain for your pet.  Arthritis in cats can be particularly hard to spot as many cats that develop arthritis simply seem less active and are often touted as “lazy”. We tend to correlate a less active cat with them being older and do not consider that they may be in pain and therefore choose not to move any more than is absolutely necessary. A joint supplement I highly recommend is called Joint MAX Triple Strength (TS). It offers a triple strength formula via a chewable tablet and represents the newest generation of pet joint supplement to help combat the stiffness and achiness that occurs when the cartilage between our pet’s bones breaks down. This powerful joint supplement is intended for older or middle aged large dogs with advanced joint disease.

Other benefits of Joint MAX TS include:
